12/7 - 12/9 2010 Heading to the South

Three of us - Kshitija, Joseph and me - flew all the way from Virginia to Christchurch, New Zealand where we will take a plane to Antarctica, spending almost 36 hours in the planes and at the airports. There were a total of 4 different flights (2 domestic in the States, 1 international over the Pacific Ocean, 1 domestic in New Zealand). We left VA in the afternoon on Dec. 7th and arrived in Christchurch on 9th. We will spend 2 nights to receive ECW (extremely cold weather) gears and to take a plane to Antarctica.

Christchurch, a small (in my opinion) city in New Zealand, is a very delightful, relaxing place to visit. December is early summer here so the temperature around this time of year is about 20 deg C (70 deg F), which is very comfortable and pleasant. It is quite an interesting experience to see the Christmas trees and ornaments in the summer. Now, we will have another trip from here to Antarctica in two days.
