12/10/2010 CDC (Clothing Distribution Center)

The next day we arrived in Christchurch, we went to CDC (Clothing Distribution Center) of USAP (United States Antarctic Program), located near New Zealand Christchurch Airport. All USAP participants are supposed to receive ECW (Extremely Cold Weather) gears from CDC before the day when they fly to Antarctica. It is basically a big warehouse for lots of ECW gears so that people can try those making sure they can survive in the cold weather down in Antarctica. We spent almost 2 hours there at CDC for a brief orientation about the ECW distribution and trying every gear that we were provided. Tomorrow we will have to show up at the terminal right next to CDC by 6:30 am to get on board.

See how many gears we get for Antarctic trip - parka, hats, boots, gloves, thermal underwear, socks, etc...

Kshitija, complaining that she gained 20 lb because of the gears.

  1. Hi team. It is so great that you have shared your blog with us. I have passed the website on to my BHS team. Hopefully they will leave you some comments / questions.

Do you get to keep the extreme cold gear? Or do you return it for someone else to use?

  2. No, unfortunately, we have to return everything upon arrival back to New Zealand since they are US government property and pretty pricey!
